In two separate incidents in New York regarding the safety of the local school system, a 12-year-old boy was stabbed at a playground while a 14-year-old boy was caught smuggling a loaded gun into his high school, with both incidents happening on Thursday, Octo. 28.
In the first incident, an unnamed 12-year-old boy was stabbed by another 12-year-old in a playground outside a high school in Queens. The boy who stabbed him ran away and fled the scene, but was later taken into custody by the police, according to PIX11.
The victim managed to rush to the school to ask for help, and he was sent immediately to Long Island Jewish Medical Center, where he received treatment for a stab wound in the stomach. He is likely to survive the incident, the New York Daily News reported.
“NYPD and EMS immediately responded to this incident, which occurred off school property and after dismissal,” Nathaniel Styer, a spokesperson for the Department of Education, said. “We will work closely with the NYPD as they conduct a thorough investigation.”
Meanwhile, in Brooklyn, a student going to Automotive High School on Bedford Avenue was caught with a gun in his bag, after an x-ray screening of his knapsack allowed school safety agents to find a loaded .38 caliber revolver in his person, according to CBS New York.
The teen was arrested for his actions without incident, and the charges against him are still pending, according to the New York Daily News.
“School Safety Agents swiftly and safely recovered this item during screenings, ensuring that all students and staff are safe,” Styer, the Department of Education spokesperson, said. “All protocols were followed, and we are working closely with NYPD regarding follow-up actions.”
Over five guns have were confiscated last week in a two-day period. Mayor Bill de Blasio, in an effort to combat possible school shootings and gun control, said that the city will mobilize police officers to start conducting unannounced screenings in schools.
