The New York Police have launched a manhunt after a 12-year-old boy was shot in the chest in Brooklyn. According to NYPD, the youngster was hit by a bullet fired from a vehicle just before 10 p.m. in the Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood of Brooklyn during a fight between two parties.
The police said two groups were fighting on the street moments before gunshots were fired. A 12-year-old who was walking by became the victim of the fight and got shot in the tussle between the groups reported NBC New York. The boy stumbled to a a nearby liquor store for shelter after he was shot at. He walked inside and asked the store owner to call 911.
Shots were fired near Malcolm X Boulevard and Madison Street in Bedford-Stuyvesant at about 9:50 p.m., the NYPD said. The cops said the boy felt an ache in his chest and realized he had been shot. He immediately ducked into a liquor store that was around the corner and prompted the owner to call 911. It is still unclear if the boy was a targeted victim or was a bystander who got shot.
According to reports, officers found at least five shell casings from the scene and were searching for a potential video of the shooting. Detectives went door to door asking for any videos or surveillance footage of the incident. The NYPD is still on the lookout for the gunman responsible for the incident. Posters and flyers have been put up in the neighborhood asking for help to trace down the gunman.
NYC Daily Post reported that there were no immediate arrests after the incident. The child was admitted to Maimonides Medical Center and is expected to make a full recovery.
In a similar incident, at least four men were killed in a shooting outside a public housing complex in Boerum Hill, according to police. The victims were taken to nearby hospitals with non-fatal injuries.
The residents were alarmed by the incident, but they weren’t surprised. “There are people standing out here all the time, there are cops telling them to go home, but they never go home,” said a resident. The person added that the neighborhood had often witnessed such problems.
