A 12-year-old boy died after his mother who was driving under the influence of alcohol steered off the road and crashed into a tree on Monday, Aug. 23.
According to Georgia State Patrol (GSP), on Monday morning, the mother, identified as 41-year-old Madrina McCay was northbound in a white Dodge Challenger on Johnny Mercer Boulevard when the vehicle left the roadway and crashed into a tree on the passenger’s side near Turner Rock Road.
McCay’s 12-year-old son, Logan McCay, was in the passenger side of the vehicle. The boy sustained fatal injuries due to the crash, according to GSP.
A GSP trooper at the scene spoke to Mccay and reported smelling a strong odor of alcohol on her breath.
Mccay is charged with DUI, first-degree vehicular homicide, failure to maintain lane, along with several other charges.
This is an ongoing investigation and no further details were available at the time of this writing.
In a similar but unrelated incident, an Indiana mother and her newborn baby died after a drunk driver crashed into an abandoned home during a high-speed police chase.
According to the sheriff’s office, on Aug.8, the driver, 23-year-old Joshua Brown, of Springfield, Illinois, was leading deputies in a chase on State Road 18 into South Ripley Street in Brookston, when he lost control and crashed.
"The vehicle was traveling westbound on State Road 18 ... Once it crossed State Road 43, the vehicle lost control, ran off the road, hit a tree, and then came to rest on this house," Indiana State Police Sgt. Jeremy Piers said.
Brown was driving under the influence of a controlled substance with two other adults, a juvenile, a toddler, and an infant in the car, authorities said.
The mother and her newborn baby were pronounced dead at the scene.
Sheriff Bill Brooks said Brown and another passenger, 21-year-old Eric Stokes, also of Illinois, attempted to flee the scene after the crash but were caught by the police.
Brown faces preliminary felony charges of neglect of a dependent, two counts of resisting law enforcement, two counts of reckless driving, and two counts of operating a vehicle while intoxicated — all while causing death. He is also accused of a misdemeanor charge of resisting law enforcement.
Stokes is facing a misdemeanor charge of resisting law enforcement.
