Police have arrested two teens suspected of involving in a street race that ended in a deadly crash killing three people.
According to the Burbank Police Department, on Aug.3, surveillance cameras captured a 17-year-old boy in a black Mercedes-Benz racing the driver of a Kia along Glenoaks Boulevard in Los Angeles.
The Kia plowed into a Volkswagen that was making a left turn. The Volkswagen, split into several pieces and caught fire, killing three of its four passengers and damaging several parked vehicles.
"I heard the biggest collision in my life," Dwip Biswas, a homeowner who lives by the crash site, told CBSLA.
Witness says at least one of the victims was ejected from the vehicle.
"They didn’t find the boy’s body in the trees for at least 15 to 20 minutes," Michael Weston, who lives nearby, told the outlet.
The fourth occupant sustained serious injuries and was rushed to a local trauma center, police said.
The deceased were identified as, 20-year-old Jaiden Kishon Johnson, 19-year-old Natalee Asal Moghaddam, and comedian Tony Baker’s 21-year-old son, Cerain Anthony Raekwon Baker.
"It’s a very sad, sad day for multiple families," Burbank police Sgt. Emil Brimway told reporters. "We have three lost individuals who have passed for something that was absolutely preventable."
According to the police, the driver of the Kia, 19-year-old Hamlet Arseni Aghajanyan also suffered traumatic injuries and was taken to a medical center for treatment.
However, the Mercedes driver, who will not be named as he is a minor, fled the scene without stopping to render aid, police said.
Aghajanyan and the 17-year-old boy were arrested on Thursday, Aug.19.
The L.A. County District Attorney’s Office charged Aghajanyan with three counts of murder and one count of reckless driving. He is being held on a $6 million bail. He is expected to appear in court on Aug. 23.
The minor driver is being detained at a juvenile detention facility on three counts of murder and one count of reckless driving, pending review of the case by the D.A.’s office.
"We recently put out a public service announcement about speeding and street racing and how it is illegal and dangerous," said Brimway.
