A 12-year-old Louisiana boy shot and killed an armed man who broke into his home and threatened his mother.
According to East Feliciana Parish Sheriff Jeffery Travis, 32-year-old Brad LeBlanc, who was armed with a pistol, encountered the unidentified woman outside her Clinton home on the morning of June 30.
LeBlanc and his accomplice, Johnathon Barker, forced the woman inside. The trio got into a scuffle during which the woman’s son, who has not been publicly identified, shot LeBlanc with a hunting rifle, Travis said.
The East Feliciana Parish Sheriff’s Office and first responders rushed to the home at the 5800 block of Winchester Lane after they were alerted about the shooting.
The responding officers performed life-saving measures and Leblanc was later transported to Lane Regional Medical Center.
The East Feliciana Parish Coroner pronounced the Vidalia man dead at the hospital.
"I don't know what you tell a kid like that," Travis told WAFB-TV.
He told the outlet that he has been in close contact with the child's mother and that she is doing everything possible to get the boy the help he needs.
"The mother is understanding that he's going to need some treatment and need to talk to people and helping him understand that he's a very normal person that was put in an abnormal situation," Travis said.
According to the sheriff, the investigators have not obtained any physical evidence from the scene or witness testimony that would frame the boy, and "at this time, we have no plans to bring charges against" him.
While the sheriff’s office investigates the incident, the local district attorney will decide whether the killing was justified.
Meanwhile, Barker was arrested for his involvement in the break-in. He has been charged with second-degree murder, principal to aggravated burglary, and principal to aggravated kidnapping.
The sheriff told the newspaper that while Barker isn’t directly accused of the killing, his involvement in the burglary has led to LeBlanc’s death. He has been booked into the parish prison.
