“Yasuke” director and producer LeSean Thomas teased fans on Twitter about their big plans for the hit anime series. Does this mean fans get to expect a season 2 of the black samurai soon?
“We hope these 6 episodes would serve as an introduction to this world and get you hype for more. We have big plans for Yasuke. It’s just the beginning,” the tweet reads.
The anime series have wowed critics and audiences when it dropped its first season on April 29 on Netflix. It even holds an impressive 95% score rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
The story is inspired by Japan’s real first black samurai of 1579, Yasuke, who used to serve under daimyo Oda Nobunaga. In the anime, Yasuke is protecting Saki from a group of warriors, who plan to bring Saki to their daimyo, who intends to use her magic powers.
In the end, the duo destroyed the Yami no Daimyo in his dark castle.
“Yasuke” is introduced as a sci-fi/historical piece as evident with its elements of magic and mecha-suited armies to differentiate it from other period drama anime.
“There is a serendipitous nature about this project, how an African-American man goes to Japan to live and work amongst the very best in Japanese anime to create an anime about an African who goes to Japan to live amongst the Japanese elite and become a warrior,” Thomas wrote.
While there is no official announcement of a second installment, the creators left room for multiple story arcs. So, it’s possible fans will get a look at a second series soon.
In an interview with Comic Book, Thomas said, “I can't say too much, but the response has been really great and it would be great to become more than what it is. I'm just really excited for the fans digging into this, and then we'll see. Obviously, it would be great to have a big splash and then keep things going."
With fans clamoring for a second installment, it’s possible to have a second season in 2022 or 2023. In the meantime, Studio MAPPA, the animation company behind “Yasuke,” is hustling to work on Attack on Titan Season 4 Part 2, Jujutsu Kaisen, and Chainsaw Man.
Only time can tell when the animation studio will get the green light and proceed with “Yasuke” season 2.
