Elon Musk has accused an X user of committing a crime for listing the names of alleged DOGE employees who helped Musk access the US Treasury payment system.
News of Musk's access to the closely-guarded Treasury data system—which controls and distributes trillions of dollars a year—raised alarm over the weekend.
"Broligarchs don't get an all-access pass to America's most sensitive info," The House Foreign Affairs Committee said in a criticism of DOGE. In response, user @rayinsideout shared names of "techies on the ground helping Musk" with DOGE's review of the US Treasury payment system.
Musk himself intervened, replying, "You have committed a crime." The tweet was subsequently deleted.
Sharing someone's private information without permission, aka "doxxing," is outlined as a violation in the X terms of service. However, the policy goes on to list "names" among information that is not considered private, and not in violation of the anti-doxxing policy.
One user shared a previous comment from Musk responding positively to another post where DOGE employees were named.
It's unclear what crime Musk believes has been committed by naming members of the DOGE task force, which has itself come under fire for a lack of transparency. Last month, a number of organizations joined as plaintiffs in a lawsuit alleging DOGE illegally violates government requirements for transparency, ethics, recordkeeping, and balanced representation.
The DOGE roster reveal comes amid growing concerns over the power granted to Musk and DOGE, a non-government entity. Since newly-confirmed Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent gave Musk unmitigated access to the Treasury data, Musk has targeted the US Agency for International Development (USAID), calling it a "criminal organization," and saying, "Time for it to die."
Trump's DC US Attorney, Ed Martin, promised to pursue legal action against anyone "who impedes your work or threatens your people," in a letter addressed to Musk.
It remains unclear what legal repercussions—if any—@rainyinsideout could face for naming DOGE employees, or if the Department of Justice has been made aware of Musk's accusation.
