The world's oldest man, Salustiano Sanchez-Blazquez, has died at the age of 112 in New York. According to senior gerontology consultant with Guinness World Records, Robert Young, Salustiano Sanchez-Blazquez died on Friday at a nursing home in Grand Island. Guinness World Records has revealed that Salustiano Sanchez-Blazquez became the world's oldest man on June 12 after the death of Jiroemon Kimura. Incidentally, Young has revealed that 90 percent of supercentenarians are females, which makes Salustiano Sanchez-Blazquez's status as the oldest person alive even more rare and exquisite.

After becoming the world's oldest man, Salustiano Sanchez-Blazquez was reportedly humbled by the attention and did not feel he accomplished anything extra. "He says, 'I'm an old man and let's leave it at that,'" said his daughter at the time. The world's oldest man, according to his children, moved to a nursing home in 2007. "We did our best," said his daughter. "We weren't going to put him somewhere just because he was old." Salustiano Sanchez-Blazquez lived in Grand Island after his wife passed away in 1988.

Salustiano Sanchez-Blazquez is survived by his daughter, 76-year-old son John, seven grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren. He will be buried at Gate of Heaven cemetery in Lewiston, N.Y. after a private funeral. According to Guinness, the world's oldest person is now a 115-year-old woman in Japan named Misao Okawa. The world's oldest man, according to current records, will be 111-year-old Arturo Licata of Italy.
