Following the death of 116-year-old Jiroemon Kimura in June, the Guinness World Records has recognized Salustiano Sanchez-Blazquez as the world's oldest man! Sanchez-Blazquez was born in a village within the province of Salamanca, Spain on June 8, 1901, he then emigrated to Cuba in 1918 to later reach the United States through the iconic Ellis Island in 1920.
The world's oldest man made his way through life as a coal miner in Lynch, Kentucky, before settling in the Niagara Falls region of western New York, outside Buffalo. There he married his wife Pearl in 1934 and the couple had two children. Sanchez-Blazquez's children are now very much grown, his son John is 76-years-old while his youngest, Irene is 69-years-old. The couple remained together until Pearl's death in 1988, he also is blessed with seven grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and five great-great grandchildren.
Sanchez-Blazquez told Guinness he "does not feel he has accomplished anything special" just because he happens to be living longer than other men. He credits his long life to eating one banana a day and taking his daily dose of six Anacin tablets. The world's oldest man also stays busy! His current hobbies include gardening, crossword puzzles and nightly gin rummy games with friends.
