March 27 marks World Theater Day, and every year celebrations span across the globe. From Japan's relief efforts to actor John Malkovitch's message, there is something for everybody.
But for the theatergoer, a classic play is the best way to raise a glass to the art. Here are five plays that would make your day unforgettable:
1. "Cat on a Hot Tin Roof"
An American classic if there ever was one, "Cat On A Hot Tin Roof" is closing off in Broadway with a bang. Scarlett Johansson stars in this tale of jealousy and lust that will be showing at the Richard Rodgers Theater until March 30.
2. "Matilda"
A classic of children's books, "Matilda" just arrived to the New York theater scene transformed into a musical. The power of innocence and stories help an extraordinary girl overcome the nuisances of her daily life. This much beloved story will open in the Shubert Theater in New York on April 11.
3. "The Book of Mormon"
The greatest success in latest years is still a hot musical that routinely hangs the sign of "Sold out." The creators of irreverent TV show "South Park" bring us the story of two mismatched Mormon boys on a quest outside of Salt Lake City. The "best musical of the century" is still going strong at Theater Eugene O'Neill in New York City and Bank of America Theater in Chicago.
4. "Mamma Mia!"
The biggest guilty pleasure of the list will bring you back to the 1970s thanks to the power of ABBA. In the weeks coming to her wedding, a young girl plots to find out who her father is. Catch it in the Winter Garden Theater in New York City.
5. "Orphans"
For those who like their plays strong, "Orphans" might bring a different vibe to a theater night. "30 Rock" and Broadway veteran Alec Baldwin stars in this tale of two violent brothers and the gangster who will become their father-figure. It will be showing at the Gerald Schoenfeld Theater in New York from April 18.
