El Tri's place in the 2014 World Cup in Brazil is settled! After a disasterous CONCAF season, Mexico was inches away from being eliminated. But thanks to a thrashing of New Zealand, the team is once again inching closer World Cup glory. But who will El Tri be playing in the World Cup 2014? Well it's time to take a close look at which teams have qualified already to determine what the draw might look like and what 'El Piojo's' men might be up against.
France beat Ukraine on Wednesday 3-0 to secure their spot in the World Cup. They will be joining Belgium, Bosnia-Hercegovina, Croatia, England, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Netherlands, Portugal, Russia, Switzerland and Spain from the European pool. Meanwhile, Mexico will be joined by Costa Rica, Honduras and the United States. From South America, Argentina, Brazil (hosts), Colombia, Ecuador and Chile have qualified. From Asia, Australia, Iran, Japan, South Korea will be in Brazil, while the African contingent is made up of Algeria, Cameroon, Ghana, Ivory Coast, Nigeria..
This leaves, as always, a difficult prospect for Mexico through the World Cup. Looking at the current draw, Mexico could end in a "Group of Death": as Bleacher Report suggests, Mexico could well end up in a group with Spain, The Netherlands and Ghana. This would be a worst case scenario: facing up against reigning champions Spain in an opening match could be disasterous for El Tri.
The best possible scenario? El Tri could be lined up with Bosnia-Herzegovina, Cameroon and Belgium: this would be a sign that the soccer gods were looking down on Mexico very favorably, although Belgium has some impressive young talent. It is likely that Mexico will have at least one tough openent in their pool: most likely Germany or Brazil. But as long as the other two teams are made up of countries like Russia or Chile, then Mexico's Olympic champions will have a fair shot of reaching their World Cup dreams.
