Women report being turned away by ER doctors in Texas despite arriving in labor and bleeding

When a pregnant Kyleigh Thurman went to Ascension Seton Williamson Hospital in Texas to get treated for pain and bleeding, doctors simply gave her a pamphlet on miscarriages and sent her on her way.

After three days, doctors finally agreed to treat her but her fallopian tube ruptured and destroyed part of her reproductive system, according to a complaint filed by Thurman and the Center for Reproductive Rights.

Thurman is not the only woman who has filed a complaint demanding an investigation into the hospital, considering federal law requires hospitals to offer abortions to save a woman's health regardless of any state ban.

According to the Texas Tribune, a second woman has filed an EMTALA complaint with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services against another Texas hospital. Kelsie Norris-De La Cruz, on her end, filed a complaint against the Texas Health Arlington Memorial Hospital, also for refusing to treat her ectopic pregnancy.

A spokesperson for Ascension declined to give details on the case, but told the Texas Tribune in a statement that they are "committed to providing high-quality care to all who seek our services."

Texas doctors can be convicted and spend up to 99 years in prison for performing an illegal abortion, making it a challenge to provide pregnant women with proper emergency care.
