A black woman said to be in her 60s was found dead a day after she was spotted running naked at the Far Rockaway, Queens beach on Saturday. At the time, the woman allegedly stripped off her clothes and ran into the Rockaway Inlet off Beach 17th St. and Seagirt Blvd. at about 9:00 p.m.
According to some witnesses, they saw the woman struggling in the water 30 feet away from shore and screaming for help. There were first responders to the incident but the woman had already been pulled down and disappeared.
It was only around 6:00 a.m. the next day when the body of the 60-year-old woman was found. Her lifeless body washed ashore, near the same place where she had initially disappeared. As of this writing, police have yet to reveal the identity of the deceased.
A day before the drowning of the 60-year-old, a man was also reported missing in the waters of Far Rockway. The man was seen yelling for help at the time near the Beach 17th Street and Boardwalk at around 9:00 p.m. Per reports, the FDNY and NYPD launched search units in the water, and helicopters could be seen flying overhead. The search was suspended that night and resumed the next day.
The incident comes almost a year after a man was also pulled down by a strong current at Rockaway Beach. The victim was identified as 24-year-old Fidel Ramirez.
According to reports, three men believed to be in their early 20s were in the water when the current became too strong. Two were able to survive but the third one was pulled down and did not make it to shore.
Witnesses present at that time, a plane landed near a wood jetty and responders rushed to the water to grab the body of Ramirez. Efforts were made to resuscitate him but failed. The 24-year-old was rushed to the St. John’s Episcopal Hospital where he was pronounced dead. It's the city's first drowning of the season, and it comes right at the start of Memorial Day weekend.
