An El Paso, Texas woman reportedly woke up to the disturbing discovery of blood on her face, bed, and apartment walls, as the red substance dripped from her ceiling early Wednesday.
At around 4 a.m., Ana Cardenas, a tenant of Cielo Vista Apartment, woke up to a dripping noise she initially thought was rain. Upon turning on the lights, Cardenas, to her horror, found herself and her bed drenched in blood, with countless blood splatters on her bedroom walls.
She immediately reported the disturbance to 911 to alert authorities. Cardenas had reportedly slept with the fan on as blood seeped through from the apartment above onto the ceiling fan, causing the red substance to be smeared across her walls and bed, as well as her face and body, FOX4KC noted.
“It grossed me out, I was in shock, I thought this isn’t real this is a dream, wake up. I called maintenance and they said are you sure and I said blood is falling on me,” Cardenas told authorities in her native Spanish.
Responding officers knocked down the door of the room upstairs, to find the dead body of a man, which was reportedly lying exactly where Cardenas' fan was on the floor below. The dead man had a carpet but his blood still managed to seep through to the woman's ceiling.
According to The New York Post, authorities concluded that Cardenas’ upstairs neighbor had been dead for several days before the incident. The man, believed to be aged between 55 and 70, died from natural causes and had been decomposing for nearly a week.
When police took down the ceiling fan, a pool of blood gushed out to Cardenas' room, contaminating her personal belongings including her bed, furniture, clothes, sheets. The items had to be thrown away due to biohazard protocols.
Cardenas, traumatized and struggling to eat following the incident, is planning to see a physician for a medical exam to make sure she doesn’t have an infection.
“It was awful, an awful impact,” Cardenas said.
Her room has since been disinfected. However, the foul smell of a decomposing body still emanates across the room, reported KTSM.
Cardenas had been staying at the apartment for a year and eight months and wants the management to cover the damage bill. However, the management refuses to compensate her, she said.
On top of that, Cardenas did not have renter’s insurance since it was not a requirement. The El Paso tenant said her lease was nearly up and decided not to extend the contract but she continues to search for a cheaper place to live in.
A GoFundMe fundraiser has been set up to help Cardenas get back on her feet following the incident.
Members from the media contacted the apartment front office for comment but only reached voicemail after multiple attempts.
