A 28-year-old woman from South Africa was lucky to survive an accident when the Toyota Hilux bakkie she was riding overturned. Unfortunately, she picked the wrong time to find her missing phone. She got hit by an unknown vehicle traveling in the extreme right lane.
The woman, whose identity has yet to be known, was sent flying roughly 50 meters away from where she was. The vehicle that hit her did not stop to check on her. Medics were called to the scene but the woman was pronounced dead when they arrived.
“Emergency Services began clearing the scene when the female decided to search for her missing cellphone. She was struck by an unknown vehicle which was travelling on the extreme right lane. The vehicle sped off without stopping. The woman landed approximately 50 meters away from the point of impact,” a post from the Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) read on Facebook.
Initially, a member of RUSA noticed the overturned bakkie as he was on patrol. He immediately called for assistance at around 4:09 a.m. It appears the driver was traveling from Pinetown to Columbia but lost control of the vehicle when they approached the Umhlanga offramp. Both were not injured when the bakkie overturned.
But when emergency services were trying to clear the scene, this was the time when the 28-year-old woman decided to look for her missing phone. A mystery vehicle struck her as she was looking for her phone and such resulted in her death.
According to police spokesperson Captain Nqobile Gwala, a case of culpable homicide was opened at the Durban North police station for investigation.
"This morning at 5am, a 28-year-old female was allegedly knocked by a vehicle on the N2 South Bound Bridge," Gwala said in a statement on Monday.
