Woman Shot Husband To End His Sexual Assault Of Day Care Children

A woman in Washington, D.C. was arrested on Thursday after she shot her husband multiple times in a hotel room, claiming to officers that she opened fire on him because he was molesting children in a local daycare.

Shanteari Weems, a 50-year-old woman from Randallstown, Baltimore, was taken into custody on Thursday after she shot her husband–whose identity has yet to be made public–and barricaded herself at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel in Washington, D.C., according to the Daily Beast.

Weems refused to open the door when police came to the scene and called her husband a child molester when she was asked if anyone in the room was injured. After an hour-long confrontation, police were able to enter the room and arrest Weems while taking her husband to the hospital for non-life-threatening injuries in the leg and head, the Baltimore Sun reported.

“Fuck him, he’s a child molester,” she is quoted by police to have said during the early-morning confrontation between her and law enforcement, an hour before they breached the room and arrested her.

When asked to explain her actions, Weems said that she runs a daycare service and that several of the children under her care claimed that her husband had molested them. She said that she was not intent on killing him and that she wanted to kill herself as well.

“Baltimore County detectives are currently monitoring the recent developments in Washington D.C.,” Baltimore County Police spokesperson Sgt. Gladys Brown said. “Due to the sensitive circumstances leading up to this incident, the Baltimore County Police Department continues to support the families impacted.”

Weems will be charged with assault with intent to kill and assault with a dangerous weapon, after two guns were found presumably with her–one in her purse, and one in the room itself. Her husband, who is a retired Baltimore Police officer, has not been charged with a crime.
