A Canadian woman handed over more than $50,000 to a psychic who promised to make her gym crush fall in love before realizing "it's a trap."

Joanne Whalen had recently separated from her husband when she went to see a psychic named Julia in 2013, according to CTV News, something she found "fun and entertaining."

"When she did the reading, she found there was a man, and I said, 'Yes there is a man I like at the gym.' She told me, 'I can bring this man closer to you for $550,'" Whalen shared.

The psychic then requested cash, which Whalen started dropping off, and gold bars from Costco, which Julia used in ceremonies. Over the next year, Whalen paid a combined Julia $50,232 but never found love with her crush.

"I said to her, 'If everything is going so great why isn't anything happening? I'm paying you thousands and thousands of dollars and I'm getting nothing,'" said Whalen. "I was so trapped in it mentally because I was so scared."

When CTV News reached out to Julia, she said Whalen was to blame for her lack of love but added she was willing to refund her.

"She didn't complete the work, that is the problem. Everything she wanted I gave her. She wanted different services and that's what I gave her," Julia told CTV News.

Whalen said she set up a payment plan with Julia but has only received $2,000. She wants her experience to serve as a warning to others.

"I just couldn't believe this happened to me, that I was part of it," Whalen told CTV News. "I would say don't start anything with a psychic because once you start, it's a trap."
