The case of a missing Meghalaya woman has finally ended. The 40-year-old Indian woman was discovered and released from self-imposed hiding after she initially intended to rob a bank, but as fate would have it, found herself locked up in the building for three days at a stretch. A bank heist that went awfully wrong, indeed!
The strange incident, which occurred on Friday, at the Meghalaya Rural Bank in Bishnupur district, Shillong, came to light after the manager reported the presence of a mystery woman inside the branch after resuming operations after the weekend. The lady was allegedly found in a “dehydrated and weak condition”, Times of India reported.
“We arrested her today and investigation is on to find out about her plan to hide inside the bank for three days,” said SP (East Khasi Hills) Sylvester Nongtnger, as cited in the media outlet.
While the police were summoned as soon as they spotted the woman, it was soon learned that she made her way into the bank as a customer and had deposited cash in the bank on Friday, before working hours ended at 2pm. But, things took an unexpected turn when district administration announced a weekend bank holiday, and the lady in question had no option but to remain cooped up indoors, stated the Superintendent of Police Vivek Syiem.
An FIR was filed against the woman for lurking around with a criminal purpose. Not much has been divulged about her familial background, nor has there been any mention of her criminal history.
The officer, as suggested in India Today, stated that the woman had kept mum about being confined inside the bank, which was revealed at the time of her arrest. Cops discovered light food items such as puffed rice and oral rehydration solutions in the woman’s kitty. Further probe into the incident is underway, but reports suggest that the bank branch encountered a few property losses— broken CCTV cameras, and a CCTV monitor, and the like.
Officials averred that marks were found inside the building, indicating an attempt to break into the strong room. Investigations are on to discover whether any other person or bank official was involved as part of the failed bank robbery plan.
