A Reddit post about a woman breaking up with her boyfriend over Elon Musk's alleged "Nazi salute" has topped the internet with over 15,000 upvotes and 4,800 comments.
While thanking supporters at President Trump's Inauguration Monday, Musk made a gesture widely interpreted as a Nazi salute. Shocked by the footage, the woman, who had been dating her boyfriend for nearly two years, showed it to him, expecting outrage or at least concern.
She detailed on an "Am I the Asshole" (AITAH) thread that instead, her boyfriend shrugged and dismissed it, saying, "It's probably just out of context. Even if it's not, it's not like he's actually a Nazi. Who cares?" He called Musk "goated for doing that" and smirked at her reaction.
"I felt my stomach drop," she wrote in her post. The conversation escalated, with the woman expressing her horror at the gesture's implications and her boyfriend accusing her of being "overly sensitive." She said he argued, "If you're going to throw away everything he's done for humanity because of one stupid moment, you're the problem."
The discussion spiraled into a heated argument, and by the next morning, she ended the relationship. Her boyfriend called her "dramatic" and accused her of letting "internet outrage culture" destroy their relationship. Unmoved, she told him to "read the history books."
The post's comment section has been overwhelmingly supportive of her decision.
One Redditor wrote, "When people tell you who they are, question it every time. When they show you who they are, believe it the first time." Another echoed, "Believe what they do. He's showing you who he is; believe him."
Some commenters praised her for dodging a bullet, "OP dodged a 'Nazi boyfriend' bullet."
Musk defended his action, seemingly placing blame on Democrats for their "dirty tricks."
"The 'everyone is Hitler' attack is sooo tired," he wrote via X with a sleeping emoji.
