A woman has been arrested after she allegedly threw her 18-month-old baby off a bridge in Houma, Louisiana on Friday, Sept. 23.
The accused mother, identified as Asha Malika Randolph, 30, reportedly threw her 18-month-old toddler son off of the Liberty Street Bridge into stream Bayou Terrebonne in Louisiana, at around 5 p.m. on Friday evening, Sept. 23. After hurling the baby into the stream, Randolph reportedly then got down from the bridge and went into the water to retrieve the toddler from drowning, WDSU reported.
The boy was immediately taken to a hospital for treatment and is expected to make a full recovery. According to Lieutenant Travis Theriot of the Houma Police Department, the boy was not seriously injured since the bridge is only a few feet off the water.
Randolph has two other children, who are currently in the custody of the state following the incident.
Following the violent abuse, officers from the Houma Police Department arrested the 30-year-old mother for the attempted first-degree murder of her 18-month-old child, KTBS 3 News reported.
Houma police are still trying to figure out Randolph's motive behind throwing her toddler son into the stream and the circumstances that led to it.
In a similar but unrelated incident, a Louisiana mother was arrested and charged with second-degree murder after she threw two of her children into a lake from a bridge, killing one infant and severely injuring the other, on Friday, Sept. 24, 2021, Latin Times reported.
Ureka Black, 32, allegedly threw her two children into the lake from either the Cross Lake Bridge or the low bridge at South Lakeshore sometime before 11 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 24, 2021.
On Friday, Sept, 24 at around 11 a.m, the locals reportedly spotted an unconscious child floating on the lake and alerted the Shreveport Police Department. Following this, Marine patrol officers were immediately dispatched to the lake and the infant who appeared to be unresponsive was pulled out from the water. However, the newborn who was rescued was unfortunately found to be dead.
Meanwhile, Black's other child, a 5-year-old boy, was also found floating in the lake moments later. The child was rescued by marine patrol officers and transported to the Louisiana State University (LSU) Medical Center with “life-threatening injuries.”
The surviving boy reportedly provided critical evidence in the case that helped officers identify Black as the person responsible for harming her own kids.
After committing the horrific crime, Black reportedly fled the scene in a gray Dodge Caravan with a Texas license plate. The officials quickly put out a “Be On the Look Out” warning for her grey vehicle and Waskom Texas police officers apprehended her near the Texas border after spotting her at a rest stop.
