It's the first confirmed attack of a person by a gray wolf in Minnesota history according to the Department of Natural Resources. In fact wolf attacks are rare only two fatal wolf attacks have occurred in North America the past decade; one in Alaska and another in Canada. A 16-year-old Solway boy is home recovering from a vicious bite wound to the head after his encounter with a wolf. The Minnesota teen says he won't be sleeping outside anytime soon.
It happened early Saturday morning at the West Winnie Campground on Lake Winnibigoshish when Noah Graham of Solway was camping with five friends. He told The Pioneer of Bemidji that he was talking with his girlfriend just before the animal chomped the back of his head early Saturday. Noah's father, say the attack was quiet and sudden. "The wolf just came up behind Noah, he didn't hear anything, and it just grabbed him by the back of the head and wouldn't let go," Graham said.
The sharp teeth of the wolf left a laceration on the rear of Noah's skull which required 17 staples to close. In addition, he has several puncture wounds behind his left ear. As of Tuesday, the DNR was waiting for DNA test results to confirm whether a wolf trapped and killed in the same campground early Monday is the animal that attacked Graham, and for results on whether it had rabies.
Scott Graham says his son is doing fine and has already begun a regimen of shots to fight off the potential for rabies.
