Good news Windows fans! Today is the day Microsoft starts rolling out the new Winidows 8.1. The update is now available for download and users will see a notification in the Windows Store prompting them to upgrade to the new Operating System. In this new update Microsoft has added multiple improvements from built-in Bing searches, smart SkyDrive syncing and visual changes to the Start Screen and application snapping. See a list of changes for Windows 8.1 below. If you want the update on a Windows 7 device you can, it will cost you, however. Microsoft was already charging $120 for Windows 8 Standard Version and $200 for Windows 8.1 Pro. Microsoft will also be selling full-version software, allowing you to install the OS on a machine that isn't already running windows. The update is available via download or a boxed copy from a retail location.
The changes in 8.1 include:
- Start button - tapping once on this brings up the tiled interface and a long press opens up system controls
- Desktop mode - lets people avoid the tiled interface entirely
- Keyboard shortcuts - removes the need to toggle between different on-screen keyboards when typing numbers and letters
- Gesture control - some applications, such as those for cooking, can now be paged through without touching a screen
- Tile sizing - the blocks on the touchscreen interface can be in one of four sizes
- Web browsing - Windows 8 machines will now display separate web pages side by side
Microsoft has also released a number of build-in app updates for Windows 8.1 as well so keep an eye out for those following the update. Make sure to check out the first look video of Windows 8.1 below and let us know what you think.
