Things aren’t looking good for Queen Elizabeth II’s second son, Prince Andrew who recently spoke with "BBC Newsnight" about his friendship with the disgraced financier and accused sex trafficker Jeffrey Epstein.
Referred to as one of the “worst PR moves in history”, the interview was such a car crash that Prince Andrew had to withdraw from public duties as several of the charities and organizations that he was a part of had begun losing sponsors and partners. It also, unfortunately, seems like his daughter Princess Beatrice has also been affected by the interview as rumor has it that she plans on postponing her wedding due to the scandal.
Princess Beatrice got engaged to boyfriend Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi and had set a wedding date somewhere in 2020. But the date hasn’t been announced yet, leading to speculations that maybe the wedding has been pushed back in light of the controversy stirred by her father as she would like to stay away from the media for the time being.
During the highly controversial interview, the Duke discussed at length the speculation around his friendship with Jeffrey Epstein and called it a “constant sore” for his family. He added that he "let the side down" over his friendship with Epstein. He then went on to deny ever meeting Virginia Giuffre, the woman who had claimed that she was forced to have sex with Andrew at the age of 17. Till now, only prepared statements in defence of the claims had been released by Buckingham palace’s press office.
A previous statement released by the Palace read: “Any suggestion of impropriety with underage minors is categorically untrue. It is emphatically denied that the Duke of York had any form of sexual contact with Virginia Roberts. Any claim to the contrary is false and without foundation.”
While Prince Andrew expected this interview to be an opportunity to remove the attention of the public from his “friendship” with Epstein and bring the focus back to his entrepreneurial endeavours, his plans have severely backfired, with his daughter’s wedding as “collateral damage.”
“Beatrice’s wedding will be collateral damage. I will not be surprised if she has a rather quiet wedding, out of the public eye, with a few photos, no live coverage,” tweeted royal expert and author Marlene Koenig. “This will be better than an announcement that they have decided to postpone marriage.”
