If you've seen "RuPaul's Drag Race" then you know that season 3 featured Carmen Carrera, who was a fan favorite. Carrera made television history when she, publicly, transitioned at the end of the show. Her fame has led her to not only gain fame, but to also become a voice for the transgender community through many activist organizations including GLAAD. Now, after walking on the Marco Marco runway, the Latina is the subject of a Change.org petition that is calling on Victoria's Secret to make Carrera a lingerie model for the brand.
states: "This petition is for Victoria's Secret to seriously consider taking Carmen Carrera on as an angel. By making Carmen the very first trans supermodel, you will help to end femmephobia within the LGBTIQQA community but also it will show the entire trans community that you embrace them as your patrons. If you watched Carmen at the Marco Marco runway show at LA Fashion week this year, then you know she has what it takes to be a Victoria's Secret Angel." Should the lingerie brand decide to invite Carrera to become a face for the brand, then she will be the first transgender model for the brand.
Carrera, who was born Christopher Roman in New Jersey, is of Puerto Rican ancestry. "I have Puerto Rican roots -- I eat rice and beans everyday," said Carrera to the Huffington Post. I was born here and this is my country. I do visit Puerto Rico often; however, what the other girls think is a bunch of bullsh-t in my opinion. It's like if I said they aren't American enough. Kiss my ass!" Carrera's fame can not only benefit the LGBT community, but also the Latino transgender community. A report by the Center for American Progress found that 18 percent of transgender Latinos are unemployed and the poverty rate of transgender Latinos is 28 percent, which double that of the overall transgender population and five times the number of the Latino population.
And if you think the model does not have what it takes to be a Victoria Secret model, think again!
The Latina was featured in the November 2011 issue of W magazine and acted in ABC's "Primetime: What Would You Do?" in 2012. The model also appeared in an episode of "Cake Boss" where she was, unkowingly, part of a prank. Carrera later set the record straight, revealing that she agreed to partake in the show to promote equality and was not aware that she would be part of a prank.
