Nintendo has sold more than 1 million hardware units so far, according to a CNET report.

"Wii U is essentially sold out of retail and we are doing our best to continually replenish stock," Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime told CNET in a phone interview. "Retailers are also doing their best to get the product to store shelves. But as soon as product hits retail, they're selling out immediately."

CNET said the Wii U is "packed with promise" and "still has a lot to prove."

"The Wii U offers a unique two-screen gaming experience on a tablet controller dubbed the GamePad," CNET's Jeff Bakalar wrote. "It's the first-ever HD Nintendo gaming system that offers gameplay for up to five people on select games. The Wii U is also fully backward compatible with old Wii games and controllers. Off-TV play on select games allows for placeshifting play without the need for a TV."

The Guardian called Nintendo's new console is a "peculiar beast."

"It marks the company's first real foray into modern gaming, with high-definition output, online multiplayer and social networking," Matt Kamen wrote. "Like its forebear, the Wii U aims to revolutionise ways to play, with its unique controller boasting an integrated touchscreen. The overall design is sleek and fetching, particularly the black Premium model. It's inviting, appealing; a new look for an old friend."

Nintendo global president Satoru Iwata said she always and strictly tell Nintendo employees never to use the term "success" to describe their performance.

"If we call a result of any of our efforts a 'success'... we might apply it as the standard for success for future projects as well, and we could wind up not trying to do better than that or not making something which is very different in nature," Iwata said in e-mail correspondence with IGN.
