“Spider-Man: Far From Home” lead star Tom Holland has just been dubbed as the heart of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). The actor received praises and positive reviews from critics.
Mashable's Alexis Nedd said that Holland’s next solo outing just solidified him as the new and improved heart of MCU. Variety’s Owen Gleiberman says that the installment is closer in spirit to the previous “Spider-Man” films that starred Tobey Maguire.
The Wrap’s Alonso Duralde praised Jon Watts and the screenwriters for carving out a space for Spider-Man that feels uniquely breezy and charming while still fitting the larger structure of the other Marvel movies. The timing of “Spider-Man: Far From Home” is also perfect because it comes in the heels of the successful “Avengers: Endgame.”
The latter saw the death of Peter Parker’s (Holland) closest ally, Tony Stark aka Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.). So in “Spider-Man: Far From Home,” Peter is still mourning the death of his best friend. He is also contemplating on who could replace him as Iron Man.
Peter and his schoolmates go on their school trip to Europe. While there, Peter tells MJ (Zendaya) how he really feels about her. But Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) destroys what could’ve been the perfect love story by asking Peter to join him on a mission.
The lead character will, of course, agree to take on the challenge. And he will come face to face with the film’s biggest nemesis to date. But despite the exciting storyline, “Spider-Man: Far From Home” did not receive all positive comments.
IndieWire’s David Ehrlich called the installment cute but painfully unadventurous. Vanity Fair’s Richard Lawson said that he’s annoyed by how the film smirks and winks as if it’s on fatigue. The film also offers an illusion of cool when at heart it’s as slavishly on message as everything else.
“Spider-Man: Far From Home” also stars Jake Gyllenhaal as Mysterio, Jacob Batalon as Ned Leeds, Marisa Tomei as May Parker, Cobie Smulders as Maria Hill, Jon Favreau as Happy Hogan and more. The film is currently showing in theaters in the United States.
