Meghan Markle has been facing a slew of challenges even before she wed Prince Harry. And things became much worse for the Duchess of Sussex after her royal wedding.
In the recent episode of “60 Minutes,” Princess Diana’s former press secretary, Patrick Jephson, said that Prince Harry’s wife was subjected to an additional cultural obstacle for the simple reason that she’s an American, a former actress and a divorcee.
Even though Meghan shares some similarities with Princess Diana, Meghan seems to be struggling more because she’s culturally different. And according to Jephson, there’s a tendency for the public to think that they understand what America is and what it represents, which aren’t always positive.
“So yes, it’s exotic to have an American actress in the Royal Family but mixed-race that’s fantastic — that’s undeniably good news and a sign the Royal Family, the monarchy, have moved with the times,” he said. “But anybody coming into that family, anybody particularly marrying the very popular Prince Harry is going to have to pass a pretty stringent exam by the media and indeed by the public at large,” he added.
But the challenge for the “Suits” alum is to work out what it’s like to be British. “Meghan isn’t and never has been an ordinary British person so part of her challenge is to work out what it feels like, what it is to be an ordinary British person, not to be one but to understand how best to use her extraordinary influence and high profile,” he said.
Meanwhile, “60 Minutes” host Karl Stefanovic seemingly threw shade at Prince Harry and Meghan for their desire to lead very private lives. The host said that the public felt cheated, most especially by the Duchess of Sussex.
However, Stefanovic’s statement didn’t sit well with some royal fans and supporters of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex. On Twitter, one of them called the host a hypocrite. In the past, Stefanovic pleaded for his privacy for two years, and he’s now criticizing the royal couple for wanting the same thing.
