Meghan Markle has been accused of suffering from the so-called American wife syndrome. The term was explained by columnist Allison Pearson.
In an article she wrote for The Telegraph, Pearson said that those who are suffering from the so-called American wife syndrome are the sort of women who initially deems a listed cottage as quaint before setting about and razing it to the ground. She also said that it’s a pattern of behavior of some American wives who come to the United Kingdom to renovate and improve buildings.
“Like many Americans, I put on a brave face, telling myself it was cute and quaint,” she said. “This went on until I was safely married and my work could truly begin. I became so obsessed with house renovations that I even wrote a How to book, Home UK,” Pearson added.
Markle was recently criticized for the amount of money that was spent to renovate Frogmore Cottage. The millions of dollars used to refurbish the property are similar to what a renovation for a bigger home would have cost.
According to Pearson, it’s possible that the cost of the renovations ballooned because American wives are known for their attention to detail. Americans are also more accustomed to having homes equipped with power showers, underfloor heating, walk-in closets, laundry rooms, indoor gyms, wine cellars and more.
Meanwhile, the Duchess of Sussex also made headlines this week after a royal expert said that Americans don’t understand why the royal family hasn’t done anything to protect the Duchess of Sussex. Prince Harry’s wife continues to be criticized by online trolls, and negative stories are still being written about her.
“Overall Americans, I generalizing a little bit, but they love the Royal Family,” Victoria Arbiter told Yahoo’s “The Royal Box.” “They have always admired the Queen, the love affair truly started with Diana, with Meghan in there they are very proud — it is one of their own behind palace walls. There is a sense, however, they feel that the Royal Family hasn’t done enough to protect Meghan. And that is a theme that is developing,” she added.
