Kate Middleton could be known as the next Princess of Wales after the late Princess Diana. The change in her official royal title would take place after Prince William is crowned as king.
Princess Diana’s Princess of Wales title is quite controversial. After she passed away, Prince Charles wed his former mistress, Camilla Parker Bowles. Since Camilla had been married to the Prince of Wales, she could have been given the title of Princess of Wales.
However, the mom of two decided to not accept the title because it was previously attached to the People’s Princess. Camilla and Prince Charles had an affair while the latter was still married to Princess Diana.
Robert Jobson, a royal expert, recently told Daily Star that regardless of what happened in the past, the title will be passed on to the Duchess of Cambridge. “If William is given the title by his dad when Charles is King, Kate will be Princess of Wales … as simple as that,” he said.
“The reason Camilla didn’t take the title is exceptional, she was Charles’ mistress. Camilla chose to use one of Charles’ other titles hence she is HRH The Duchess of Cornwall in England and Wales. Should Camilla be styled as HRH the Princess of Wales, she could be,” he added.
Jobson went on say that the Princess of Wales title has nothing to do with Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge. But the mom of three would get it because she’s Prince William’s wife and not because of anything she has been doing as a member of the royal family.
The royal expert also noted the fact that Prince William would only get the title if Prince Charles awards it to him, and it’s not something automatic when he takes over the throne. As of late, 21 other men have held the coveted rank throughout history, and Prince Charles is the latest one to have made it to the top 10.
“The title ‘Prince of Wales’ is one of the great continuities of English and Welsh and, latterly, British history. The incumbent has no formal public role or responsibility legislated by Parliament, but the bearer of the title is usually the next in line to the throne or heir apparent,” he explained.
