Star couple Shawn Mendes and Camila Cabello might have ended their romantic relationship, but promise to continue to be best friends.
They issued a joint statement on their break up and posted on their Instagram stories Wednesday evening. The “Señorita” collaborators addressed their fans in their statement, and said that they had decided to end their romantic relationship, but "our love for another as humans is stronger than ever." The singers shared that they started out as best friends and will continue to be so. They said they appreciate their fans' "support from the beginning and moving forward."
The announcement comes as a suprise as the singers, who were first romantically linked in July 2019, were recently clicked while they were engaging in some Miami Beach public display of affection (PDA), looking very much in love. They were also seen in the same area in June, reported Page Six.
In August, Cabello addressed engagement rumors after fans spotted her wearing a ring on her left hand. She said that she didn't know "what hand the engagement ring goes on, so sometimes I’ll just, like, put it on ring finger."
In July, the couple celebrated their second anniversary on Instagram, with Cabello wishing Mendes a happy anniversary, and hoping for more love, friendship and joy. Along with the sweet caption, she posted photos of the couple enjoying their time together.
Last December during an interview with Entertainment Tonight, Mendes spoke about his bond with Cabello that was formed even before they started dating. The 23-year-old said that Cabello been one of his best friends since he was 15 years old, and shared that they weren't in a rush to get engaged despite rumors. He said that they were really young, so he didn't want to jump "insanely fast."
When they started dating, they didn't keep it a secret and were often photographed sharing several PDA moments. Their first major public appearance as a couple was in August 2019 at the MTV Video Music Awards, where they entertained their fans with performance of their hit song "Señorita." Few months later, they performed the song again at the American Music Awards.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, the two quarantined together in Miami and that was the time when they got closer to each other, according to Mendes, reported PEOPLE. In fact, he said that the first few months of lockdown served as an inspiration for his song "Summer of Love."
