In a historic move, NBC announced that Cuban-American journalist Tom Llamas will succeed Lester Holt this summer as the new anchor of 'NBC Nightly News,'. This appointment marks the first time a Latino journalist will solo anchor a major network's evening newscast.
Llamas, a seasoned journalist, has had notable confrontational interactions with President Donald Trump.
In 2016, during the U.S. presidential campaign, Llamas gained attention for his rigorous reporting on Republican candidates. At a New Hampshire town hall, he questioned the use of the term "anchor baby" by Jeb Bush and Donald Trump, highlighting its controversial nature.
The term, "anchor baby," is a derogatory remark referring to children born to non-citizen parents in a country with birthright citizenship. It was often used in Trump's 2016 presidential campaign as he called for a crackdown on illegal immigration from Mexico.
He asked Trump, "Are you aware that the term 'anchor baby' — that's an offensive term. People find that hurtful."
Trump replied, "You mean it's not politically correct and yet everybody uses it?"
The president later stated that he would continue to use the term.
Additionally, in May 2016 he had another notable exchange with Trump, where he questioned the funds Trump had claimed he had raised for veterans, citing discrepancies in the accounts. In response, the president labeled him "sleazy" for knowing "the facts well."
Llamas will replace Lester Holt, who has anchored 'NBC Nightly News' for a decade. He announced his departure in February, reflecting on his career and expressing gratitude for the opportunities he's had. Holt will continue his association with NBC, focusing on 'Dateline NBC.'
Throughout his career, Llamas has covered major events, including presidential elections, natural disasters, and international crises. His reporting has earned him multiple Emmy Awards and two Edward R. Murrow awards.
