Prince William and Prince Harry were only 15 and 12, respectively, when their mother, Princess Diana, died in 1997. Seeing how the young princes have grown into honorable men, it’s safe to say that Diana would be very proud of them.

But what did the late princess think of her boys when she was still alive? Interviews with Diana’s friends and confidantes compiled by the Daily Mail reveal some of what the Princess of Wales thought of her sons, William and Harry.

“A Hothead Like Me”

Darren McGrady, Diana’s personal chef, recalled that Diana was fond of saying “William is deep like his dad and stubborn, and Harry is a hothead like me.” The late princess would supposedly remark that Harry tends to be impulsive and would do “the first thing that comes into his head.”

According to McGrady, Diana liked to say that “they” (the royal family) will look after the heir, while she will look after the spare. She reportedly “connected” with her younger child more than with her firstborn.

“Emotional And Difficult”

The Sun reports that Ingrid Seward, the author of “Diana: An Intimate Portrait,” claimed that Diana considered William to be “very sensitive” and Harry to be “artistic and lively.” According to Seward, when they were young, William was the more academic of the two.

Meanwhile, Harry was having a hard time coping at school. Diana supposedly wanted Harry to go to Eton, “otherwise he'd be singled out as being the one who wasn't so bright.” However, she added that Diana believed in Harry and thought he was the one who “could cope with anything.”

Diana’s biographer noted that the late royal would have been “very fond of” the Duchess of Cambridge. She said that Diana would have recognized that Kate was good for William since her elder son tends to be “emotional and difficult.”

“Bloody Nuisance”

Ken Wharfe, Diana’s former bodyguard, recalled how much fun William and Harry had with their mother and how easygoing she was. He recounted the story of how the late princess told him sympathetically that she doesn’t envy his job of looking after her children. “They can be a bloody nuisance,” Diana jokingly said as shared by Wharfe.
