One of the best-selling artists of all time is finally getting her first major studio biopic, and it’ll be here tomorrow.
“I Wanna Dance With Somebody” focusing on the trials and triumphs of superstar singer Whitney Houston premieres in theaters tomorrow.
The film follows Houston’s career from her early “I Wanna Dance With Somebody” days to her final days and tragic death at the age of 48 due to accidental drowning brought on by heart disease and cocaine.
Based on the trailer, we see iconic moments in the singer’s life such as her one-of-a-kind showstopping performance of the national anthem at the 1991 Super Bowl and the making of her music video for “I Will Always Love You.” We also delve into the darker side of her life, which includes issues with addiction, her family and public perception.
The movie features British Actress Naomi Ackie as the lead, who has starred in “Star Wars: Episode IX - The Rise of Skywalker” and “Master of None.” The film also stars Stanley Tucci as Clive Davis, who discovered Houston at age 19 and Ashton Sanders as Bobby Brown, Houston’s ex-husband.
Tamara Tunie also stars in the film as Cissy Houston, a Gospel singer and the mother of the superstar. Nafessa Williams plays Robyn Crawford, Houston’s longtime friend and former lover. Clarke Peters plays John Houston, who is Houston’s father and Bria Danielle Singleton stars as Bobbi Kristina Brown, Houston’s daughter who also tragically passed due to a combination of drugs and drowning.
The project was directed by “Harriet” Director and Actress Kasi Lemmons and comes from the writer of “Bohemian Rhapsody” Anthony McCarten.
“I Wanna Dance With Somebody” hits theater starting Wed. Dec. 21.
