Whirlpool is recalling over half a million washing machines with a defective component that might cause them to catch fire. However, the company said it will not be receiving returns just yet but has instructed buyers to unplug the defective products at the moment.
Whirlpool said that as many as 519,000 washing machines might be affected in its recall, Daily Mail reported. These appliances were sold in the UK between October 2014 and February 2018.
The company recalled the machines because of a defect in their door-locking system. This defect might cause the door to burst open and cause the machines to overheat and catch fire.
However, the company would only be processing the recalls by January next year. Meanwhile, Whirlpool said that those who own the affected models must unplug the appliances.
Whirlpool said that the affected washing machine brands are Hotpoint and Indesit. The company also released the affected models, which as listed by commercial code and brand name.

One family had to live 7 weeks in a hotel after their house caught on fire due to a defective washing machine. Louise Yusuf said she was using the equipment for around five minutes when she noticed a smelled something burning. Upon checking, she saw the washing machine burst into flames.
“We had to run outside in our pyjamas and we could see black smoke coming out of the side of the house and I thought, oh my gosh, this could be the house,” Yusuf said. Fortunately, the fire was put off in time but not before it burned the fuse box and boiler.
