In recent years in Mexico health problems have worsened, such as obesity, diabetes, hypertension, and problems related to food nutrition.
Due to this problem, the Government of Mexico City has decided to act quickly with the following decree made in the Official Gazette of the Federation, Diario Oficial de la Federacion (DOF).
A few weeks ago, President Andrés Manuel López Obrador published in the Official Gazette of the Federation, Diario Oficial de la Federacion (DOF) the decree adding to the General Health Law, which prohibits the sale and marketing of certain foods and beverages of certain characteristics in the national territory.
Foods and beverages that will be banned are those containing oils and trans fats, when these foods have been added at the end of or during the industrial processing process.
According to the presidential decree, this new regulation will come into force as of September 2023 throughout the whole Mexican territory.
Some of the foods are:
Cakes, cookies, vegetable oils, microwave popcorn, frozen pizza, frozen french fries, sauces, sodas, milk, and flavored waters, among others.
