Halloween is one of the most enjoyable days of the year for children. But when it comes to wandering the streets of any city, there are always dangers to be had, and not just from ghouls and goblins. With traffic to be avoided and the occasional mishievous citizen, it's important that parents keep an eye on their kids and that kids are aware of the potential dangers when trick or treating. Knowing when it's going to get dark can be a good tool to know when to finish the neighborhood route or when kids may need to stick a little closer to home. When it comes to safety tips, Officer Christopher Ianotti from New York's 83rd Precinct had this to say: "Parents should be aware of the potential risks that can affect children who are not supervised properly. Trick-or-treaters should always have adult supervision, even if they are traveling with a group of friends, to ensure that the only scary experiences children have are those associated with the spirit of Halloween." He also provided these important tips.

8 Safety Tips For Kids And Parents Trick Or Treat Experience.

  • 1. Be aware of your surroundings at all times; be familiar with the neighborhood you plan on visiting.
  • 2. Avoid poorly-lit areas and homes of people you do not know.
  • 3. Travel in groups. Remember there is safety in numbers (At least 1 adult)
  • 4. Avoid displaying your valuables or electronic devices. Thieves will use this holiday to hide behind a mask to commit crimes.
  • 5. Do not use your cellphones when crossing streets.
  • 6. Place emergency identification information discreetly inside clothing of small children, in case of accidental separation.
  • 7. Halloween treats should only be consumed if they are packaged appropriately in their original, unopened packages.
  • 8. Avoid homemade or unpackaged treats.
