Just like Queen Elizabeth, Prince Philip has already planned his funeral ahead of his death. As soon as now, Buckingham Palace has already prepared themselves for the moment when Prince Philip dies, from how they will break the news to the public to how and where they will bury Prince Philip’s remains.

Since Prince Philip ended his public appearances when he retired from his royal duties in 2017, there has been a growing concern over his well-being. Considering his age and health, it’s not surprising that many think that his death may come anytime soon.

As a matter of fact, death is something that Prince Philip has long prepared for. In 2016, Buckingham Palace revealed the plan set in place when Queen Elizabeth dies. Dubbed as “Operation London Bridge,” this plan includes everything that will take place soon after Queen Elizabeth’s death. As for Prince Philip, there is also a plan set in place, and it suggests that his funeral is going to be different from how his wife’s.

The protocol for when Prince Philip passes away covers how the public will find out about his death to how long Queen Elizabeth will mourn his death. When Prince Philip dies, the BBC will be the first media outlet to break the news to the public. If he dies in his sleep, the BBC will announce his death at 8 a.m. the following morning.

When it comes to his funeral, Prince Philip does not wish it to be like Queen Elizabeth’s. He does not like the public to make a fuss over his funeral, and he does not like his body to be lying in state at Westminster Hall. This is unusual, considering that Westminster is always given a six-hour notice to prepare for a royal funeral like this.

While Prince Philip is entitled to a large funeral because he is the Queen’s consort, Parliamentary documents show that there’s really no official process in deciding when a state funeral should be held for a person other than the Sovereign. This is something that Prince Philip doesn’t mind at all since he actually doesn’t prefer a fancy funeral.

Since years ago, he has been closely involved with the arrangements for his funeral, which he wants to take place at St. James’ Palace instead of Westminster. This was exactly where Princess Diana’s remains laid for several days before she was buried in 1997.

Prince Philip also doesn’t like the public to view his body as his guest list only includes his family, his friends and the heads of state from the Commonwealth countries. The service will be held at St. George’s Chapel in Windsor Castle, in the style of a military funeral.
