Born Georgios Kyracios Panagiotou, this was not George Michael's first car accident. In 2010, Michael spent eight weeks in prison after being involved in a car accident in his sport utility vehicle after which authorities found him to be under the influence of cannabis. He soon had his license suspended for five years. The more visible half of the former musical group, WHAM! (with Andrew Ridgeley), Michael reportedly was treated for cuts and bruises following Thursday's accident in Britain.
Though a British pop sensation, many of George Michael's and WHAM!'s hits have been very popular in the United States. "Careless Whisper," his first single as a solo artist, did very well in the 1980s. Additionally, "Last Christmas" can be heard multiple times on the all-Christmas radio stations during the winter months. It has been covered by a number of other artists, both in Europe and America including Fleetwood, Pa. native Taylor Swift.
Michael also participated in the original Band-Aid musical venture, in which he, as well as names like Paul Young, Duran Duran and Phil Collins, raised money to fight hunger in Africa. The ensemble's most well-remembered song, "Do They Know It's Christmas?" was penned by Band-Aid creators James "Midge" Ure and Bob Geldof, and included Michael in its background vocals.
