Season 1 of "True Detective" continues tonight with episode 2, “Seeing Things.” Will Hart and Cohle be replaced on the Dora Lange murder investigation? Find out tonight at 9 p.m. on HBO! HBO

“True Detective” returns tonight to continue it’s inaugural season with episode 2, “Seeing Things.” For fans of the new series, be patient, due to it’s episodic format, more background into the lives of both Hart and Cohle will be divulged slowly. We already know that Cohle had a daughter, whom had a birthday around the death of Dora Lange, although we don’t yet know how the detective went from respected law enforcement official, to a chain smoking, beer-guzzling consultant. While “True Detective” hasn’t explicitly told the audience yet, it is safe to assume that Hart has made a nice life after his career as a detective, working in private security. In direct comparison, from what we know as of now, Cohle has given into his battle with alcohol, revealing in the premiere episode that if it’s after 12:00 p.m. he is drinking and no one interrupts his seemingly sacred practice.

The bread and butter of “True Detective” are its suspenseful reveal alongside the informative flashbacks, and tonight’s episode “Seeing Things” begins to tell how the partners’ story unfolds. According to the HBO synopsis for the second episode, Hart and Cohle begin to feel the pressure from the Dora Lange murder, with such a high profile crime; the pair is expected to have some suspects. But without any substantial leads, Quesada warns Hart and Cohle they might be replaced by “three detectives from the new occult-crimes task force.” With impeding replacement, both Hart and Cohle put in serious over time hours to look into their solo lead, which “takes them from a rural cathouse to an incinerated church.” While the Dora Lange murder is certainly the overarching theme in the series, both detectives’ personal lives will begin to unravel. In “Seeing Things’ the audience will see the dissolution of Hart’s already strained marriage to Maggie, in search for solace, Hart discovers respite outside of his home and family.
