A clip making rounds on social media appears to show Qatari TV hosts waving goodbye and mocking Germany’s human rights gesture that showed the team lining up for the official photo with a hand covering their mouth in their Group stage match against Japan. Germany went on to lose that match and then ended up eliminated from the World Cup by goal differential. The Qatari hosts then wave goodbye.
In the clip, the hosts are seen waving their hands goodbye while holding their hands over their mouths. The gesture made by the Germans was done because they felt their voices were being silenced. Germany had been planning to wear OneLove armbands in support of LGBTQ+ rights in Qatar but FIFA had announced they would face sanctions for doing so.
Eden Hazard on Germany's gesture: "Yeah, but then they lost the game. They would've been better off not doing it and winning. We're here to play football, I'm not here to send a political message, there are people better placed for that. We want to focus on football" [@RMCsport] pic.twitter.com/UG3cIx8JNA
