The long awaited premiere of HBO’s new series “The Leftovers” is nearly here, the show which is based off of Tom Perotta’s critically acclaimed novel of the same name is set to premiere this Sunday at 9 p.m. So after months of eerie trailers, and ominous promotional posters, fans will finally get a glimpse inside the world of “The Leftovers.”

Sunday’s premiere episode occurs approximately three years after the world as we know it was changed forever, while influenced by science fiction themes of disappearing people, “The Leftovers” is a story of average citizen, living in the average suburban town of Mapleton who are simply attempting to survive following the vent that has been deemed “The Great Departure.”

The event was a rapture-like phenomenon causing 2% of the worlds population to literally disappear out of thin air, now “the leftovers” who did not disappear must attempt to navigate life as normally as possible after losing, friends, family and loved ones, a task, that is nearly unfathomable.

The series stars Justin Theroux, Amy Brenneman, Christopher Eccleston, Liv Tyler, and Ann Dowd. And while closely follow the Garvey family, who in a stroke of luck did not lose any member of their family to “The Great Departure,” but have now found themselves at odds in the aftermath. Theroux as Kevin Garvey, patriarch and chief of police in the family’s suburban community, Brenneman as Laurie Garvey, the once happily married wife of Kevin, who following the “Rapture” turns to a mysterious cult, referred to as “The Guilty Remnant” for support.

In addition to author Tom Perotta serving as series co-creator, Damon Lindelof made famous due to his series “Lost” will work alongside Perotta to take on a whole new genre of missing persons. “Friday Night Lights” director Peter Berg directs the pilot episode. Be sure to the premiere episode of Season 1 of “The Leftovers” on Sunday, June 29 at 9 p.m. on HBO and if you can’t watch live check it out online available via live stream at HBO Go.
