A resurfaced clip of former Vice President Kamala Harris warning that Donald Trump would quickly side with Vladimir Putin over Ukraine is going viral as the newly re-elected U.S. president escalates tensions with Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelensky.

During a September 2024 presidential debate, Harris warned that under Trump's leadership Ukraine could be abandoned.

"You would give up, for the sake of favor and what you think is a friendship with [Putin]—known to be a dictator—who would eat you for lunch," she said. At the time, Trump dismissed her concerns, insisting he would end the war on his own terms.

Now, just weeks into his second term, Trump's remarks calling Zelensky a "dictator without elections" and his decision to hold talks with Putin without inviting Ukraine have drawn concern from leaders across Europe and within the U.S. Meanwhile, Putin has seized the moment to announce that Russia will restore diplomatic relations with the U.S.

Social media users highlighted Harris' prediction. "You can't say she didn't call it," one post read. Others accused Trump of rolling over for Putin. "Kamala was right," The Lincoln Project wrote. "...Took him less than 30 days to roll over for Putin."

Zelensky has pushed back against Trump's rhetoric, emphasizing that elections cannot be held under martial law and warning against any peace deal that favors Russia's demands. European leaders have also rallied behind Ukraine, further isolating Trump on the global stage.

The past warning from Harris echoes the present concern felt by Trump's critics as negotiations with Russia proceed.
