Wal*Mart keeps expanding its family with a new store in Nicaragua. After announcing the news early this year, the supercenter has kicked off with a special inauguration event Wednesday night, which included special guests such as Nicaragua's Vice Presidente Omar Halleslevens, U.S. Ambassador of Nicaragua Laura Dogu and Carlos Arroyo, director of Wal*Mart Central America.
The new Wal*Mart is first of its kind in the Central American country, located in Carretera Sur in the capital Managua. It's also the largest retail store in the city. According to Corporate Affairs Manager Eduardo Garcia, the company decided to open a new store in the country due to the growing disposable income of Nicaraguan consumers.
Wal*Mart, the world's largest company by revenue, has over 11,500 stores in more than 25 countries. It's also the largest retailer in Central America with stores in: Costa Rica, Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras and Nicaragua. Walmart Centroamerica has its headquarters in San Jose, Costa Rica. Here are 7 things to know about the new supercenter in Managua, Nicaragua.
1) The retail store has launched in the format of Supercenter, which includes food, clothing, electronics and home goods.
2) The project has an estimated investment of $17 million.
3) Wal*Mart in Nicaragua generates 150 direct jobs and another 1,575 indirect jobs.
4) It is located in a safe location in Managua and has security.
5) The store offers an ample parking space.
6) Though the supercenter opened Thursday, Wal*Mart has been in Nicaragua since 2005.
7) The company operates under three formats of supermarkets: Pali, Maxi Pali and La Union.
