"Walking Dead" fans are you ready to get schooled? Well, if you haven't been practicing your zombie decapitating skills in your garage like me, you are way behind on your summer work! Have no fear though, you will have time to catch up on your 'walker' homework before school starts. Confused? Well, let me explain, AMC has teamed up with University of California to offer fans and academics alike a course on a hypothetical zombie apocalypse. The course entitled, "Society, Science, Survival: Lessons from AMC's 'The Walking Dead.'" is a FREE eight-week course taught by a multidisciplinary team of professors from the UC Irvine faculty. The team includes Zuzana Bic, public health; Joanne Christopherson, social sciences; Michael Dennin physics; and Sarah Eichhorn, mathematics. Do you think the physics professor also doubles as a physical education instructor because I am not as great of a shot at Carl is, and I can't get shown up by a kid!
"'The Walking Dead' provides many poignant case studies related to the scholarly areas covered in the course, and it helps that it's one of TV's most popular shows," Bic said in a news release. "There will be something for everyone in this course, which will explore concepts as varied as post-disaster nutrition, the foundations of human survival and stereotypes in a Darwinian environment."
This class is literally a nerd's dream. I am most certainly going to sign up, I feel that I am well prepared after a recent trip to Home Depot, I categorized all the items in my cart into weapons and survival supplies, so I've been doing my hoework. "The Walking Dead," which is based off the graphic novel of the same name written by Robert Kirkman is not only my favorite show, but pretty much everyone's favorite show. With such a vast original fan base coming from the comics, it is no wonder the show has immeasurable success. From Comic-Con to university sponsored classes, it seems that everywhere you go there is a "Walking Dead" herd.
The class aside from being something I want to major in, also serves as a stellar promotional plan for the show. With the premiere of Season 4 coming this October, fans can watch and learn in tandem. The first course is scheduled for Monday, Oct. 14, the day after the Season 4 premiere of "The Walking Dead." AMC's hit zombie show has broken a number of basic cable records and is a ratings killer among the 18-49-year-old demographic. "There is clearly a growing appetite for engagement with 'The Walking Dead,' and we hope this online course will drive a deep, sustained connection with the show during its upcoming fourth season and offer a legitimate educational experience that can be applied even more broadly," Theresa Beyer, vice president of promotions and activation at AMC, said in a statement.
