Volvo has announced its all-new Active High Beam Control technology, a system that will allow a driver to use their high beams at all times without blinding another driving coming from the opposite direction. A giant leap forward in active safety, high beam control not only benefits the driver, but benefits other commuters sharing the road as well.
Mercedes-Benz first pioneered active high-beam via a system that shuts off the high-beams once an oncoming car is detected. However, the latest Active High Beam Control from Volvo boasts the ability to only block off the portion of light that will hit the oncoming vehicle, allowing the high beam to continue its function at the rest of the field of vision. According to Volvo, the program is designed to be so precise that an oncoming motorcycle can be detected and blocked just as effectively.
"The technology makes driving at night more comfortable and safe. It also makes it easier to focus on the driving and is an excellent example of our Designed Around You approach, always focusing on features that really make a difference to the customer," says Prof. Lotta Jakobsson, Senior Technical Specialist Safety at Volvo Cars Safety Centre.
What's more, Volvo also claims that the system can function at speeds as low as 9 mph.
The first vehicles to feature the cutting edge light technology include the updated S60, V60, and XC60. The option will be available as early as next year.
Stay tuned as we learn more about Volvo's latest system during its debut at the Geneva Motor Show next week. In the meantime, be sure to check out its promo video below:
