"The Voice" is back for a new season, with a bang: much buzz has been generated over the arrival of Shakira and Usher, who take the seats that formerly occupied Christina Aguilera and Cee Lo Green. Much expectation has been place in the new foursome - will they click as well as the old one? Will they be more vicious? Less competitive?
It has been said that "The Voice" season 4 echoes the old "The Voice" season 1: much banter, but no eyebrow raising tension. It is obvious that Shakira and Usher bring a new energy to the proceeding - their musings are just as entertaining and their chemistry with each other, as well as with vet coaches Adam Levine and Blake Shelton, is undeniable. What is more, it is obvious that they love the game.
Executive producer Mark Burnett says the panel's chemistry has always been the show's priority, and there is no newcomer vs. veteran rancor. "They are very harmonious. Everybody can get a little friendly heated in the competitiveness, but it's a family," he said.
"Usher is super, super cool, and Shakira is so electric... She just emanates this light source. It's hard not to fall in love with her."
Veteran coach Adam Levine had nothing but good words for his new colleagues. "Shakira is a firecracker and Usher's got a certain way about him that's very confident, very cocky - like myself."
Usher sees "The Voice" as an opportunity to show the making of an artist that is usually reserved to behind the scenes. "There is something magical that happens in small rooms that never gets to be seen until a show like this," he said.
Shakira, on her part, thinks the best thing of her new job as a coach is to share what she has learned in her career. "I am not there to teach anyone how to sing. Most of the contestants have great voices. I can use my critical eye to help identify areas where they need improvement, and be there to support them."
How will the new judges fare in the run up to the best voice of the season? "The Voice" premieres March 25 at 8 pm ET on NBC.
