"The Voice" judges, especially Shakira, were stunned by performing duo Midas Whale after they did something unexpected this week. Midas Whale is made up of friends Jon Peter Lewis and Ryan Hayes. Lewis was formerly a contestant on Fox's "American Idol" during its third season.
While "The Voice" judges' chairs were turned, Midas Whale perfectly performed "Folsom Prison Blues." The Idaho-based group then shocked the panel and audience when they began to converse with Shakira in her native Spanish.
"I hate when they can speak Spanish," Judge Adam Levine said, lamenting that he couldn't understand their conversation.
Usher, the first judge to spin his chair around to face the accordion and guitar-playing duo, offered the bromide "[do not] judge a book by its cover." After what Midas Whale said was a tough decision, they asked Levine to be their mentor.
While Midas Whale may have chatted with Shakira in Spanish, a young woman from Bronx, N.Y., who goes by the name of Cathia sang "Yo No Me Voy Por Vencido," or "I Will Never Give Up," by songwriter Luis Fonsi. Shakira connected with Cathia during her performance saying afterward that Cathia would "take the world by storm."
As viewers pick their favorites, it will be interesting to see how far these unique contestants will make it.
