The union of a man and woman carries on beyond the grave for members of the Jerusalem Church of Christ founded by one Prophetess Mary Akatsa. The ritual came to light after the video of Beatrice Mbayi’s wedding with her deceased husband surfaced.
William Godfrey Mukalama of Funyula Busia County, Kenya re-married his widow even though he was dead. The funeral was preceded by the wedding ceremony during which revelers sang and danced in honor of the couple.
Dressed in her bridal best, Mbayi celebrated her husband’s funeral. In a video shared on social media, the woman can be seen walking into an open-sided tent where her husband’s body is kept. All around her people can be seen and heard rejoicing the union. Following the song and dance, a man starts presiding over the ceremony.
He officiates the union and tells the man’s corpse that this will help him and his wife remain united as one. He requests the corpse to accept the wedding ring that the woman places around the corpse’s finger. This symbolizes their renewed union. Those in attendance can be heard ululating and shouting as the ring is slid on. The widow then joins the celebration.
From there, the members of the funeral party celebrated the wedding. Eventually, the group returned to performing the funerary rights before burying Mukalama, Tuko reported. This kind of funerary celebration is rare in Kenya. It is the members of the particular church which follow these rituals.
Grieving over the dead is not a concept for the followers of the Jerusalem Church. For them death is seen as a sort of ‘graduation’, Emmanuel’s Blog reported.
Those who follow Akatsa, who they call Mummy, are encouraged to celebrate death. While not all funerals for the church turn into weddings, the god-woman has on previous occasions attended funeral-weddings of her followers. The woman used to work as a house help before she became a self-appointed priestess.
Her followers started increasing after 1988 when she accompanied a man claiming to be Jesus. The strict church leader is often seen chiding and hitting her followers when displeased. Yet her followers seem to continue having enough faith in her as a spiritual leader to marry the dead.
