Mexico's national soccer coach Víctor Manuel Vucetich has been fired, according to sbnation.com Following Mexico's humiliating loss to Costa Rica in the World Cup qualifiers, there have been calls for a change of leadership in the team's management. Cancha reports that America manager Miguel 'El Piojo' Herrera will replace Vucetich, and the official FMF annoucement came later yesterday. Under Vucetich's leadership, the Tri beat Panama but lost to Costa Rica, managing to scrape into the World Cup play offs where they will take on New Zealand.

Following a meeting early Thursday morning, Televisa CEO Emilio Azcárraga informed Justino Compean, president of the FMF, that Herrera would no longer be in charge of the America team to take over El Tri's leadership in its bid for World Cup placement, Récord reports. Ricardo Peláez will take over as Director of National Sport Selections, while Héctor González Iñárritu will stay on as Administrative Director. Until this morning, Vucetich himself was unaware of the iminent changes to the Mexican squad.

Mexico has had an arduous and difficult road towards Brazil with a very unstable leadership of the team. Former coach Jose Manuel "Chepo" de la Torre lost the job earlier last month, while his replacement, Luis Fernando Tena, was replaced by Vucetich after a 2-0 loss to the United States. It was only thanks to the USA's last-minute victory over Panama that Mexico's hopes of World Cup qualification remain alive. The first match against New Zealand will be played at Estadio Azteca in Mid-November.
