Law enforcement responding to an active shooter situation at Florida State University on Thursday confirmed five people are dead and four others are injured, reported WFTV. According to the local news outlet, two shooters were involved, one of whom is dead.

National news outlets have only confirmed one death and six hospitalizations.

A Tallahassee Police spokesperson confirmed that one person is in custody, per the Associated Press. The extent of the injured victims' injuries was not immediately known, and authorities have not released additional details about the person in custody.

Tallahassee Memorial Healthcare hospital confirmed that it is "caring for patients related to an incident that has occurred at Florida State University" following the active shooter situation.

An alert system at Florida State University issued an "Active Shooter" warning on Thursday at around 12 p.m. The alert read, "An active shooter has been reported in the area of the Student Union."

University authorities have not yet cleared people to leave their shelter, advising them to continue there and "await further instructions." "Police have responded to an active shooter call at the Student Union. Stay alert for more information," reads the latest communication from the authorities on X.

Florida Sen. Rick Scott reacted to the development, saying in a statement that he is "praying for the safety of everyone at FSU and a swift recovery for those injured."

FBI Director Kash Patel also issued a statement, saying "my team and I have been briefed on the shooting at Florida State and our FBI Jacksonville team is on the ground assisting." "We will provide full support to local law enforcement as needed. Please keep the FSU community in your prayers," he added.

USA TODAY reports that President Donald Trump says he has been "fully briefed" on the active shooter at Florida State University in Tallahassee. Trump responded by saying: "It's a shame. Horrible thing."
